Fitness x Fashion

To quote Canadian actor and former MMA professional Georges St-Pierre, “If you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you do good." Apply this quote however you see fit, but for me, looking and feeling good at the gym pushes me to do good for my mind and body. Nothing makes me feel more confident stepping into the gym than when I have on an outfit that I love. Who says fitness can’t be fashionable?

If you’re looking for fashion tips to help fuel your mind and body, look no further. I’m going to break down my top three tips on what to wear to the gym in order to look and feel your best.

Tip #1

The first fashion tip that I absolutely live by is color coordination. When it comes to looking stylish and chic, aesthetics are everything. I like to wear the same color top and bottom, but as long as you stay within a color scheme you’ll be good to go. By pairing the same color top and bottom, or mixing in white and black to complement your favorite color, you’ll look classy and aesthetically pleasing. My most recent color obsession is brown, which has become increasingly popular in recent months. My workout wardrobe primarily consists of Gymshark and lululemon, so here are a few of my current favorites in brown.

Gymshark

Lululemon

I find that I gravitate towards my lululemon biker shorts and leggings when I’m picking out my gym outfit. The buttery-soft material truly makes them worth the price. While I am looking to expand to Alphalete, Alo, and Darc Sport in the future, I’ve recently been sticking to my comfort zone. I’m a huge fan of Gymshark styles and prices, which is why I typically default to the brand. However, I find that their leggings aren’t quite as comfortable as I would like them to be while working out. Their sizes tend to run smaller, so sometimes I’ll feel too constricted. I do enjoy their biker shorts though, so I’m likely to grab those from my closet to pair with my array of Gymshark sports bras.

Tip #2

Accessories, accessories, accessories! If you haven’t quite guessed what this tip is about, I’m allll about the accessories. From your water bottle down to your socks, these little details are the perfect way to tie your outfit together. If you like to keep your outfits neutral like me, you can always turn to accessories to bring in a pop of color to your gym outfit. My favorite way to accessorize my fit is by adding a duffle bag or fanny-pack to store my personal items. I also love to choose socks that are the same color as my outfit, or I’ll go with a basic pair of white ankle socks. Because I’m obsessed with everything matching (I’m one of those people, I know…) I try to match my headphones to my water bottle as a finishing touch. My go-to pop of color at the moment is definitely light pink.

I recently jumped ship from Apple Airpods to Beats earbuds, and I don’t think I’ll ever go back. I opted for the Beats x Kim Kardashian SKIMS collaboration because of how beautiful the colorways are. While they don’t sell them directly on Beats anymore, you can find them on Amazon (be warned, they are a bit pricey now that they are off the market). They fit my ears so much better and don’t fall while I’m trying to workout (biggest fitness pet peeve). For running or a more intense workout though, I would recommend using full headphones rather than earbuds to have that extra level of security. I have the Beats Solo Wireless in the rose gold color.

Tip #3

Last but certainly not least, we can’t forget about our feet. Wearing the right shoes is crucial to your workout, and the type of shoe may be dependent on what you’re exercising that day or what type of exercise you enjoy. Since shoes can be pretty expensive, it’s likely that you’ll have a few staple pairs instead of having one pair per outfit (if you have this I envy you). As a neutral girly, my go-to shoe color is white, what a shocker! My reasoning is white matches with everything. It makes it so easy to have just a few options to choose from rather than having very niche patterns/colors that are hard to match. And because I tend to wear darker colors like brown, black, and grey, I find that I like to have something lighter on my feet so they can stand out.

When it comes to lifting, I’ll go with a flatter sole like Converse, Vans, or Nike Blazers to better support my weight and keep me grounded. I work from home and walk on my walking pad all day, so I also have a pair of walking/running shoes from Nike to have better arch support. For my flat shoes, I like to go with high tops as I feel the appearance of flat shoes look better this way. Just my opinion! For my running shoes, I’ll go with a traditional low top style and pair them with taller socks to cover up my ankles.

Now that you’ve read these three fashion tips, you’re ready to hit the gym and the runway. You can totally pull inspiration from your own closet, or start from scratch and start building that time capsule gym wardrobe. By purchasing neutral colors from good quality brands, you’ll be sure to create an array of outfits for years to come. For example, purchase three different styled black tops and three different styles black bottoms. You can now mix and match your pieces with your new accessories, and the outfit possibilities are endless.

Fitness is so important to improve our physical and mental wellbeing, and helps to enhance our quality of life as we age. If fashion is your thing and gives you an extra push of fitness motivation, capitalize on that! Cheers to looking good and feeling good in 2024.
